Direct testing:

  1. It is used when the professional wants to know how the child responds to a standardized test/stimulus or specific set of materials.
  2. It is used to compare the child’s performance with other children.
  3. It is used to assess the child’s cognitive, motor and receptive communication skills.

Observation (Naturalistic):

The child is observed in natural setting to record various aspects of child’s behavior.
Examples: gross motor skills, toileting, feeding etc.

Parental interviews and assessment by parents:
It is obtained in two ways.
  • Parental interviews: Interviews are useful when professionals are interested in family, perceptions of children’s abilities, transitions or medical procedures and priorities for services.
  • Asking parents to complete standardized measures, rating scales or checklists.
