The reasons for displacement of people are often inter-connected. Millions of people have had to leave their homes for one or several reasons. Some of these reasons are:
Development of dams, reservoir and irrigation facility.
Development of urban infrastructure likes roads, flyovers, hotels, etc.
Development of industries likes mining, power plants, oil exploration and extraction, pipelines etc.
Agricultural expansion to meet growing need for food.
Conversion of forests into national parks and forest reserves.
Natural disasters like drought, flood, earthquake, landslide, etc.
Conflicts like nuclear war, civil war, etc.
All these factors are the main reasons behind displacement of people.
The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) predicts that economic and environmental refugees will continue to make up a significant percentage of the total refugee population around the world. The World Bank estimates that every year since 1990, roughly 10 million people worldwide have been displaced by developmental projects.
