Electrical wiring done at home

The service cable feeds into an electrical distribution circuit. Between the point of entry of the service cable and the distribution circuit there is normally an isolating switch, fuse or circuit breaker, a meter for measuring consumption and a provision for earthing or grounding of appliances.

• The electricity supply from the Local Company arrives in our house at a main fuse. This prevents problems with our wiring from interfering with other supplies in the locality.
• The fuse is used to prevent tampering. This then feeds the meter via two large wires – one blue (black colour), one brown (red colour). These are sheathed in grey.
• The meter receives the electricity supply from the service head and measures the consumption of power used in the house.
• Then it goes to the consumer unit called as the fuse board and forms the main distribution point to the circuits in the house.
• The wires from the meter terminate at a double pole switch (double pole switch break both the live and neutral wire) inside the consumer unit.
• On the other side of the switch, the neutral is joined to a connector block which accommodates all the neutral, blue and black wires from the circuits.
• The live, brown or red wire goes to a bar which sits behind one end of all the fuses.
• The link from here to the terminal of each circuit is protected by a fuse mounted between the two.
• Another connector block accommodates all the earthing wires from the circuits and connects them back to the main earth terminal.
