Harmony of contrasting colors

Contrasting color schemes are based on opposing hues and tend to be stimulating and balanced because they include both warm and cool hues. Two colors, which are placed extremely opposite on the color wheel, one might be cool, and the other warm, are chosen for the color scheme. When the two contrasting colors are placed side by side, one appears to advance while the other seems to recede, producing a vibrant effect. Example of this are red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple.

Neutrals may be added to enhance the contrasting color scheme, and to strike a balance between the two contrasting colors used in a scheme.
