Principles of Residential Garden Design

The residential garden is generally used for growing ornamental garden, kitchen garden and nutritional garden. Therefore residential garden is for beauty, utility and personal enjoyment. The basic principles of residential garden design are

  • Background should be neutral in the form of wall, hedge or tall tree.
  • Design should be contrast. It should break monotony by variation in colour, form and texture.
  • Balance between different components like masses, forms, colours etc. should be maintained.


  • The central area of the garden should be kept out of any item of major interest which can be achieved by having a lawn.
  • Repetition or duplicating some features of a garden helps to achieve rhythm, balance and unity.
  • Harmonious lines, often artistically curved, bring in rhythm to the landscape.
  • Repetition of certain elements such as form enhances the rhythm.
  • Variety breaks the monotony in a garden and it is achieved by contrast of colour, form and texture
