Lesson 08:Outdoor Landscaping

Introduction

A garden is laid out for the enjoyment of human beings. The aim of the designer while designing a landscape is to secure a reasonable amount of comfort and convenience for the pleasure of those for whom it is intended. Undue complexes should be avoided. Nature’s teachings, artistic feelings and ordinary good taste must be given priority. Use of varieties of plants gives greatest pleasure, but attempting too much in a small space is a fault, which is to be guarded against. The designer must be aware of the sources of pleasure in landscape gardening.

• All parts of the garden or its various features should exhibit equality in all respects and must be in agreement.
• Utility is another priority aspect where convenience, comfort and neatness should be given enough consideration.
• The lines in the garden layout must be in accordance with accuracy and proper finishing.
• The garden must create a picturesque effect and present a balance of composition.
• The disposition of objects in the garden should be without confusion and must be simple in all respects.
• Abrupt breaks between the objects should be avoided in order to maintain continuity and link between various parts.
• Creating a sudden and unexpected change of scenery makes good contrast.
• Each and every item of garden must be set apart for a special purpose.
• The garden should be lively and inspiring for all to love nature.

Landscape designing offer scope for innumerable combinations and permutations. In landscape design, space is utilized for human use, convenience and enjoyment. The basic material is used on the available space in such a way as to enhance the beauty as well as usefulness of each item. Today the importance of landscape gardening is realized. There are good parks and gardens in cities for people to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. The concept of Bio-aesthetic planning of Professor Lancelot Hogben has become popular.

• The aim of bio-aesthetic planning is to plant ornamental flowering trees along roads, in parks, house compounds, public places , and also to develop national parks and to extend landscape gardening to the entire country.
