Lesson 10:Garden Features
Garden Steps
|
- Steps are the means by which different levels of the gardens can be connected.
- They are the gracious garden ascents that set the mood for an entire landscaping scheme.
- The material, design and construction should be appropriate to the architecture or the landscape around.
- They are the practical, functional elements as well as integrally related parts of the composition
- While planning steps, both function and appearance should be considered.
- Stepping stones should be easy to walk on and their tops should be reasonably flat.
- Steps may be of brick, stone, tile, wood, concrete, grass or combinations of two or three of these.
- Natural rocks, cut granite blocks, milestones and stone pillar footing are also the usual materials for steps.
- To plan the steps one must consider the relationship between the proportion of the steps and the dimensions of the slope.
- In making a step, the vertical face or raiser, and the horizontal face or tread are to be considered.
- The outdoor steps are generally much shallower in raiser height and broader in tread than any indoor steps.
- Usually it is advisable not to have more than 15 cm raiser height, but should have at least 30 cm wide tread as minimum.
- Planting near the steps can do a great deal to soften its lines or to give it more apparent width.
