Lesson 10:Garden Features

Herbaceous border

  • The herbaceous border is an informal arrangement of annuals or biennials and perennials or a combination of both, know as the mixed border.
  • The herbaceous border can be placed either in front of a hedge and against a wall or along the paths.
  • This is a characteristic feature of the English garden, containing hardy perennial herbaceous plants.
  • Bulbous plants and annuals are commonly grown in the herbaceous border.

  • Herbaceous border needs a good depth of soil and many situations.
  • The border may be placed against a wall, a fence, shrubs, a hedge, to form double border (one behind another) divided by a grass path.
  • A border may be put to mark a division between one part of the garden and another.
  • It is always desirable to have a living background such as a hedge or a shrub.
  • Care must be taken to see that the roots of shrubs or hedges do not interfere with the border plants.
  • Therefore, shrubs or hedges having limited root-spread should be preferred.
  • If a formal design is desired, the border should have curved margins
