Carpet bedding

  • Carpet bedding means covering an area, preferably with a bed or a series of beds, with dense low-growing herbaceous plants according to a set design.

  • Carpet bedding arranged in a slope or a slanting position in the form of a figure or some letters are cut out with the help of plants having different growth habits or having different coloured leaves.
  • To have a useful contrast, the plants of one colour are used as background and then run through these the plants of other colours in groups, stripes or lines to have the desired effect.
  • Carpet bedding can be designed in various ways. In a carpet bed, the plants are planted closely according to a set design.
  • After first planting, the plants are trimmed as soon as they are well established now-and-again to keep them within the limits of the design.
  • The plants are generally not pruned during the winter when most of the foliage plants develop good colour under Indian climatic conditions.
  • Any gap in the bedding due to mortality is filled up by previously grown plants in pots.
  • Once in every 3-4 months the beds should be top dressed with well-decomposed manure
  • Carpet bedding is an interesting feature in a garden.
  • Carpet bedding plants of various colours are sometimes utilized to form figures or letters
