Lesson 1: Drafting Equipment – Tools And Materials

Templates

Templates are punched plastic, metal, paper or cardboard drafting tools that may be traced to produce commonly used shapes which eliminates the repetitious task of measuring and laying out the symbol each time it is to be used on the drawing. Openings in the templates are shaped to represent the outline of various symbols and fixtures. The most common one is the circle and ellipse templates. Others include other geometric shapes, symbols, lettering, plumbing, electrical, furniture etc. some special purpose templates which are exclusive and in different scales are available for doors, windows, landscape features, electrical symbols, plumbing symbols, furniture, outlines, lettering, etc. These are used to draw each part of the symbol separately giving flexibility of choice.
