Masonry

The materials of masonry are stone, brick and tile, concrete, plaster and mortar, all of which come from mineral compounds found in earth’s crust. The excellence of masonry materials is numerous. They do not burn, rot or decay or invite insects or rodents. Most of them are long lasting and require little maintenance. Perhaps, no other materials afford such widely varied colors and textures and they can be shaped in countless forms or laid in innumerable patterns. These qualities explain why most great historic architecture still in existence is of masonry.
