Brick and tile (Clay)

Typical clay bricks’ are blocks of clay hardened by heat in a kiln. An Indian standard size is 3” x4”x9” . Although red brick is commonly seen, colors range from almost white, pale yellow, pink, purples and grays. On the basis of texture as well as resistance to breakage, moisture, fire bricks are conventionally divided into several types:

1. Common or sand struck brick : made in mold coated with dry sand, have slightly rounded edges and are used for exposed side walls.
2. Face bricks: it has sharp edges and corners, more uniform in color and texture and resistant to weather than are common bricks.
3. Paving bricks: are those made harder by firing at higher temperatures to withstand abrasion and to lessen absorption of moisture.
4. Fire bricks: are usually yellow, and suitable for places that are subjected to great heat, such as fireplaces.
