Lesson 9 : Wall Elements: Windows

Components Of A Basic Window

A window is comprised of two parts:

  1. Window frame, and
  2. Sashes or shutter frame. Window frames are fixed to the opening in 'the wall, by means of suitable hold fasts. The sashes or shutter frames are fixed to the window frames by means of suitable hinges. The window frame has sill at the bottom, unlike doors.

The function of the window is to admit light and air to the room and to give a view to the outside. It should also provide insulation against heat loss and, in some cases, against sound.
