Sky light

WALLS AND WINDOW TREATMENTS 3(1+2)
Lesson 9 : Wall Elements: Windows

Sky light

A sky light is provided on a sloping roof, to admit light. The window projects above the top sloping surface. They run parallel to the sloping surface. The common rafters are suitably trimmed and the sky light is erected on a curb frame. The opening so made is properly treated by lead flashing to make the roof, surrounding the opening, water-proof.

Window Wall: They fill an entire wall from floor to ceiling and there is a minimum break between indoors and outdoors. They begin above the floor and follow a gable to its peak. There may be a minimum of divisions on a strong pattern of verticals or horizontals. Window walls are costly to maintain. Glass is expensive to buy and replace, difficult to make weather proof around the edges, must be cleaned often. If the glass is movable, screws and window hardware are needed. Almost all windows bring the added expense of curtains, draperies or blinds. But sensibly large, well placed windows are worth their cost

Elliptical or Arched – Arch windows add a unique charm to your house. These add a different touch to your regular windows. Elliptical or arched windows often placed above double hung, casement or fixed windows in today’s new homes.

Oriel – Oriel windows are much like bays and bows, but they’re supported by brackets or cantilevers and are usually much smaller. A very small oriel placed higher up is sometimes referred to as a garden window.

Palladian – Palladian windows are several windows hung in a special configuration. Palladians are a pair of double-hung windows on either side of a single double-hung that has a semicircular window above it.
