Lesson 9 : Wall Elements: Windows

Awning & Hoppers

Awning – An awning window resembles a store or deck awning that it cranks open from the bottom. These are designed to be placed high on walls. They give light and facilitate circulation of air when positioned properly. They are especially useful for bedrooms where the competing claims of privacy and light need to be considered.

Hoppers – These windows are very similar to awnings, but they swing open from the top. The entire pane tilts inward to open, allowing for maximum ventilation. Hopper windows can make privacy and home decor an issue. Because they tilt into the room, blinds, shades and other window dressings are difficult to use in conjunction with hopper windows. Their tilt designs also make them a poor choice for ventilation on a rainy day; water will drip right into the room. They're usually placed in basements, so there's an added security risk for any windows installed at ground level.
