Lesson 12 : Wall Elements – Built-In Space Storage

Bathroom Storage Design

When planning the bathroom design, it’s always important to take into account the use of the space.

  1. How many people will be using it?
  2. How often will it be used?
  3. What items will the users need to store in the space?

By determining the answers to these questions, the right type of bathroom storage can be easy to find and plan for a clean and clutter free arrangement. In general, bathroom wall storage units and cabinetry are not considered the essentials in the overall design and layout of our living spaces. The general belief is that these provisions do not perform as much practical function as their kitchen counterpart and thus, these take the least option among the "must-haves" inside the bathroom. In reality, the built-in storage system to be adopted in the bathroom, should have same concern as other areas in the building. The vanity cabinetry and doors should not interfere in the closing and opening of the door of the bathroom.

While considering the use of wall storage units in bathroom, one can explore the integration of other fixtures like functional storage drawers, shelves and rack systems. Even issues like cabinet hardware need to be thought about at the very early stages of design.

One of the most used and recognized aspects of bathroom storage is the medicine cabinet. The medicine cabinet can be used for storing health items such as medicines and bandages, as well toiletries, make up and perfumes. Medicine cabinets can be mounted to the surface of the wall, recessed part way into the wall, or recessed completely into the wall.

When considering a built in cabinet in bathroom, there can be a choice between a frameless style and the traditional framed cabinetry. These types of cabinetry can have traditional and modern design depending on the choice of door preference. If the interior of bathroom should project a modern look, there is an option to decide a channel or slab design which will be a perfect blend in the overall character of bathroom. However for a formal and mature look, the option could be using curved or raised cabinet panels.
