Lesson 8 : Sleeves

Straight Sleeve

The Straight sleeve does not follow the natural curve of the arm and therefore cannot mould the arm or fit neatly. Its construction is basically such that it does not allow for the bending of the elbow. It hangs loosely. But it is altogether of an easy and comfortable fit. Its comfort depends on its being loose enough for the whole arm to move freely inside it.

The Straight sleeve is used for a variety of styles— short, mid-length and long—and in a variety of garments, such as blouses, dresses, nightwear, overalls and even coats.

Different straight sleeves are

The Basic Sleeve or Set-in sleeve: The basic sleeve is a mounted sleeve, and is drafted to fit a basic armhole. The basic sleeve is the foundation upon which an understanding of all other sleeves is based. It can be made in different length.

  1. ShortSleeve: a sleeve which extends from the shoulder to mid-way down the biceps and triceps area.

  2. Mid length: a sleeve which extends from the shoulder to a length mid-way between the elbow and the wrist.

  3. Long sleeve: sleeve up to wrist level, or full sleeve.
