Contraction of warp and weft

Fundamentals of Textile Design 3(2+1)

Lesson 7: Yarn calculations

Contraction of warp and weft

Interlacement of the yarns makes the otherwise straight yarns to bend out of straight line. So the length of the cloth produced will be smaller from the actual length of yarn used for its production. This contraction in length is due to

  • Count of yarn
  • Number of intersections – higher reed size and higher picks will have more contraction
  • Nature of weave– plain weave has more contraction due to higher interlacements
  • Character of yarn – regards its elasticity
  • Tension applied during preparation and weaving
  • Subsequent processes if any to which the cloth is subjected
