Lesson 15: Satin weave and its variations

Introduction

Satin weave is basically identical to twill weave except that the diagonal twill line is interrupted purposefully. It requires 5 to 12 harnesses to weave and the weave is designated by the number of shafts used. Ex: 5 shaft satin – 5 harnesses are used in weaving this fabric. Greater number of warps of finer count is seen on the face of the cloth than on the reverse. The part of yarn thrown on the surface before interlacement is called a float.
