The bearded needle

Fundamentals of Textile Design 3(2+1)

The bearded needle

Also called spring needle, has a fine, springy hook curved downwards with a finished tip called beard. A small groove is cut in the stem which receives the hook in the closing step thus preventing the loop formed to slip out. This works in coordination with the sinker which holds the fabric down and a presser to close the hook when the new loop is formed. Fabrics obtained with this needle are fine with more closely spaced stitches. It is the cheapest and simple type to manufacture but is replaced by compound needle.
