Kalasha motif

Kalasha (a holy ceremonial water jar) is symbol of fertility, hence an important part of sacred occasions like wedding and other ceremonial events. Kalasha is a typical traditional water jar depicted with round body with the base and mouth beautifully designed like a full-blown lotus. Kalasha, the symbol of the universal mother goddess, is supposed to contain Amrit (inexhaustible elixir), which makes one immortal. In ancient times it was believed that the sprinkling of Kalash-water, accompanied by mantra over ones head would ensure plenty, purity and prosperity. Later it was adopted as motif in variety of textiles, whether printed, woven or embroidered (Fig.12.34).
