PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN AND APPLICATION
Lesson 7: Definition of Motifs, Pattern and Design

Design

Design refers to the arrangement of visual elements in a work of art in the best possible way. A good design shows an orderly arrangement of the materials used to create beauty in the product.

Design, as applied to textile fabrics has a slightly different meaning than its usual meaning. In this field, design is pattern or figure that is repeated at regular intervals and is understood to refer to patterned fabric. The designs are often classified as being naturalistic, realistic, stylized, geometric or abstract in nature.

Aspects of design
There are three important aspects of design:

  1. Origin or source:Every motif draws its inspiration from some source. Nature is the most common source of inspiration for the designers. Flowers, animals, trees, birds, waves, wood grain etc. offer good range of ideas to be used as the motif in the design. Manmade objects such as nails, screws, pencil, blade, utensils, musical instruments, wheels etc. have also inspired variety of pattern motifs.

Use of Imagination influences our creativity and responsible for the origin of motif. Shapes which do not occur in nature are sometime used for motif creation. It requires our imagination to explore the idea and put it into some shape which in turns creates designs. Abstract designs are examples of such creativity. Sometimes symbols also provide source of inspiration for designing. These symbols may be commercial, religious, political, etc. they are the visualization of invisible concepts. Examples are chemical symbols of physical elements, musical notes denoting concept of sound and rhythm, calligraphic symbols, etc.

  2. Treatment or interpretation

  3. Composition or arrangement
