• Body cylindrical, compresses posteriorly
• Head depressed
• Cleft of the mouth extends beyond the eye
• Hardy species, can withstand acidic waters
• Breeding season April to June
• Largest of the Indian murrels
• Max size 1.2 m, grows to 50 – 70 cm in a year
• Highly predatory, even cannibalistic
• Suitable for culture in swamps
