6.3.1. Introduction
Cell culture refers to the culturing of cells derived from multicellular eukaryotes, especially animal cells under controlled conditions. In 1885, Wilhelm Roux maintained a portion of the medullary plate of an embryonic chicken in a warm saline solution for several days and established the principle of tissue culture. Later, the cell culture techniques advanced significantly in the 1940s and 1950s mainly to support research in virology. Viruses grown in cell cultures are purified and used mainly for the manufacture of vaccines. Salk polio vaccine was one of the first vaccine mass-produced using cell culture techniques by John Franklin Enders, Thomas Huckle Weller, and Frederick Chapman Robbins. |
