Aim: To fix the vessel’s position by horizontal and vertical sextant angles.

Learning Outcome: At the end of this practicals student will be able to calculate the vessels position and distance between shore objects and vessels by using sextant angles

Materials Required: Marine Sextant , Given nautical chart, parallel ruler, compass and pencil

Procedure: The marine sextant is an optical instrument used to measure vertical and horizontal angles between objects. These vertical and horizontal angles can be used for fixing the vessel’s position and calculate the distance between the vessel and shore object.

The sextant is used for measuring the angel at the

    • Observers eye between the top of the object such as light house, tower etc when the sextant is held vertically.
    • Two objects of different bearing on shore when the sextant is held horizontally
