11.2.1 General classification of maturity stages in P. fucata

Male and female cannot be distinguished externally. There is a pair of gonads present over the intestine and hepatopancreas. Duct arising from the gonads opens as gonophores located at the anterior end of the gills.

STAGES	CHARACTERISTICS
Inactive / Spent resting	Gonads translucent, sex is in indeterminate form.
Developing / Maturing	Transparent gonad, Oocyte size is 60 x 47.5 µ Gametogonic materials begin to appear.
Mature	Gonads yellowish cream in females. Oocyte size is 68 x 50µ. Average nucleus size is 25 µ.
Partially spawned	Gonad becomes loose. Oocyte size is 51.7 µ.
Spent	Immature Oocytes
