Introdcution
Oysters are the economically important bivalves along with mussels and clams. Their economic importance is due to the quality of their meat and shell utilities. While edible oysters of different species are world wide preferred for their nutritious meal, pearl oysters are of immense value as they yield natural pearls. In general bivalves are sedentary found in the ocean at a depth of 18-22m and found attached to rocky ridges, usually 19 Kms offshore and also in freshwaters. About 28 species of pearl oysters are reported so far. The common species found along the Indian coasts are Pinctada fucata, P. chemmitzi, P. margaratifera, P. anomioides and P. atropurpurea. |
