EXERCISE-15: ESTIMATION OF AMINO ACIDS (BY SORENSON METHOD – FORMAL TITRATION)

Principle

  • The formaldehyde reacts with the amino group (-NH2) of an amino acid and thereby prevents the formation of zwitter ions with carboxyl groups.
  • This permits the carboxyl groups (-COOH) to exert maximum acidity, which can be measured by titration against a standard NaOH solution, using Phenolphthalein as an indicator.
