Macroscopic examination

MACROSCOPIC EXAMINATION

  • Spontaneously discharged tapeworm segments and nematodes (roundworms, pinworms, trichurids etc.) can be recognized by direct macroscopic inspection of the faeces, by decantation of faeces in water in a glass tray or by pouring the faeces mixed with tap water through a sieve (aperture: 0.3mm) which will retain the worms.
  • Nematodes, immature amphistomes and tapeworm proglottids, transferred into saline in petridish can be observed against a dark background by the unaided eye or by using a magnifying lens. when the samples are received from field units, the gross appearance of the faecal samples should be observed before doing the egg count or faecal-culture.
