Direct examination of faecal sample

DIRECT EXAMINATION OF FAECAL SAMPLE

  • In this method a small quantity of the faeces, of about the size of a pin's head is placed on glass slide along with 3-4 drops of water or physiological or normal saline.
  • The faecal sample is thoroughly emulsified with a needle, evenly spread over the slide and examined under the low power of microscope. This method is easy and useful provided the infection is heavy.
  • In case no egg is found, it should not mean that the animal is worm free. Such samples of dung should be subjected to concentration methods as light infections can be diagnosed by such methods only.
