GENERAL MORPHOLOGY - STABLE FLY

Stomoxys calcitrans

  • Medium sized greyish fly resembling Musca in appearance but slightly smaller
  • Non-retractile forwardly directed baton-like proboscis
  • Arista plumose on dorsal aspect only having about 8-10 bristles
  • Four longitudinal stripes on thorax
  • Three dark spots on second and third abdominal segments
  • Apical cell of the wing open
  • Mechanical carrier of Surra and bacterial diseases
  • Intermediate host for Hymenolepis carioca, Habronema microstoma and Setaria cervi. Duration of life cycle – average 30 days
