Young Chicks

YOUNG CHICKS

  • Young ostriches under 15 kg in weight do not normally pose any great problems for experienced handlers. Ostrich chicks should be handled with the greatest care as they are very fragile creatures.
  • The chick can be cradled in one arm with a slight band pressure on its back to prevent it from kicking free and falling.
  • It can also be carried with one hand slipped between the legs and the other hand applying slight pressure at the base of the neck.
  • Under no circumstances chicks or young birds are grasped or carried by neck or legs as this may cause permanent injury. When placing small birds back on the ground, it is wise to stabilize them for a moment in order to avoid uncoordinated or rushed take offs when they are released.
