Brain and spinal cord

BRAIN AND SPINAL CORD

Cerebrum (View image)

  • It shows peripheral cortex (grey matter) and central medulla (white matter). The cortex shows 6 layers i.e.,
    • Outer molecular layer
    • Outer granular
    • Outer pyramidal
    • Inner granular
    • Inner pyramidal cell layers and
    • Layer of polymorphous cells
  • The medulla is made up of nerve fibres

Cerebellum (View image)

  • It shows peripheral cortex (grey matter) and central medulla (white matter). The cortex shows,
    • Outer molecular layer
    • Intermediate Purkinje cell layer and
    • Inner granular or nuclear layer of small neurons

Spinal cord (View image)

  • It shows H-shaped grey matter surrounded by white matter
  • The large multipolar motor neurons are located in large ventral horn
  • The dorsal horn is narrow and small multipolar sensory neurons are observed in dorsal horn
  • White matter is composed of medullated and non medullated nerve fibers
