POND AND NURSERY MANAGEMENT

Nursery pond

  • The nursery pond is a shallow pond which is used to hold the fish hatchlings (newly hatched fish larvae from the eggs) temporarily till they reach the fry stage. These ponds vary in size from 0.02-0.10 ha with depth of 1.0-1.5 m. Drainable or non-drainable earthen ponds and cement cisterns are commonly used for nursery rearing of fry. Drainable ponds have an inlet for filling the pond with the water and an outlet to drain the used water. Both the inlet and the outlet are provided with fine meshes to avoid the entry of predators or escape of the fry from the pond.
