Management of rearing and production ponds
-
Pre-stocking pond preparation includes clearance of aquatic vegetation, eradication of predatory and weed fish as in nursery pond management. Fertilization can be done with the organic manure like cowdung at the rate of 10 tonnes/ha. About one third of recommended quantity can be applied 15 days prior of stocking, the rest of the fertilizer can be applied in fortnightly doses. Inorganic fertilizers like urea and single super phosphate @ 200 kg and 300 kg/ha/year respectively can also be applied fortnightly.
-
The normal stocking density of fry in rearing pond is 0.1-0.3 million/ha and that fingerlings in the production pond is 10,000 – 20,000 nos/ ha.
-
Supplementary feeding can be done with the mixture of groundnut oil cake and rice bran at 1:1 ratio by weight. Fingerlings can be fed at the rate of 5-10% of their body weight .
-
Once the fingerlings reach a size of 80-100 mm/8-10 g, they can be harvested by netting and transferred to the production ponds.
