Identification of culturable freshwater fishes

IDENTIFICATION OF CULTIVABLE FRESHWATER FINFISHES

Aim: To identify the important cultivable finfishes.  

Finfishes

  • Majority of the culturable freshwater fishes belong to the order Cypriniformes, Siluriformes and Channiformes.
  • The order Cypriniformes include carps which are the major group of freshwater fishes that are widely cultured in India. Indian major carps and exotic (Chinese) carps are the important types of carps.

Indian makor carps

Exotic (chinese) carps 

  • Silver carp
  • Grass carp
  • Common carp

The order Siluriformes includes the catfishes characterized by the presence of  Weberian apparatus that connects the ear, air bladder, Pharyngeal bones with grinding teeth  

The order Channiformes are represented by murrels (snake head)

The order Perciformes is representd by Tilapia
