CATFISHES

  • The catfishes belong to the order Siluriformes. They are air breathing, i.e., capable of breathing directly from the atmospheric air and are characterized by the absence of scales, presence of two pairs of long barbels in the upper and the lower jaw, presence or absence of adipose fin.                     

pungassius

Pangasius pangasius (Pangash)

The identification features are:

  • Adipose fin is present
  • Forked caudal fin
  • Maxillery barbels (thread like protrusions around the mouth) reach the base of the pectoral fin

Magur

Clarias batrachus (Magur)

The identification features are:

  • Adipose fin is absent
  • Elongated first dorsal, long anal fin

Singhi

Heteropneustes fossilis (Singhi)

The identification features are: 

  • Adipose fin is absent
  • Rounded caudal fin
