PROCEDURE FOR AUSCULTATION IN LARGE ANIMALS

  • A phonendoscope is employed in large animal practices.
  • The region to be auscultated is moistened with oil or water to avoid the materials interfering with auscultation.
  • The chest piece should be firmly placed against the walls to minimize crackling sound caused by friction, against the hair coat of the animal.
  • When the hair coat is long or matted together it is necessary to expose the skin by separating the hair or wool before applying chest piece, so that they do not form barriers to sound.
  • Standing posture is advisable.
