HAIR COAT

  • The coat in dog and cat reflect the condition of the animal disease status. Normally the coat is thick on the back and sides rather than ventral.
  • The hair growth phase is divided into
    • Anagen- growth phase of shorter duration
    • Catagen – transition phase where hair follicles are shortened and hairs are pushed up
    • Telogen –resting phase of longer duration
  • There is no uniformly phased hair in dog’s body and moreover the pattern changes with exposure to light and physiological status like pregnancy and parturition.
  • Hair Coat is classified as
    • Normal- there is both primary and many secondary hairs eg. German Shepherd
    • Short haired- there is predominantly short primary hairs and fewer secondary hairs eg. dachshund
    • Long haired-predominantly secondary hairs eg. Cocker Spaniels, Cats.
