Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)

BLOOD UREA NITROGEN

  • Single randomly collected specimen is of less value than are serial BUN value. Non renal variables limit the usefulness of BUN concentration as an indicator of glomerular function. Anticoagulants containing any nitrogen must be avoided. The anticoagulant of choice is EDTA. Heparin, sodium, citrate, sodium oxalate ae also acceptable. BUN can also be estimated with serum samples.
  • Dietary factors must always be considered in interpreting the results of any laboratory examination for urea nitrogen. The animal should be fast for 12-18 hrs.
  • Normal 8-25 mg / dl.
  • Increased BUN concentration: meat, fever, trauma, infection, toxemia, hemorrhage, drugs, corticosteroids, tetracycline, dehydration.
