Lesson 17 : Sewing Technology

Stitching quality measurements

Every sewing operation must satisfy the consumer some degree in each of these three areas:

  • Style- dimensions for emotional appeal
  • Utility- dimensions for function
  • Durability- dimensions for the life of the style and utility aspects

Stitching quality is measured with the following parameters:

  1. Stitch size: Length, width & depth dimensions

  2. Stitch tension: Is the degree of pressure with which the stitch encompasses the fabrics.

  3. Stitching sequence: Is the line value of the stitching or seaming line.

  4. Stitching elongation: Is the degree to which the sewing line can be stretched and still be able to return to its original length after the stretching force is removed.

  5. Resilience: Is the degree to which a flexed sewing line can return to its original plane after the flexing force is removed

  6. Stitching elasticity: Residual elongation- Is the elongation that remains after an elasticity action takes place.

  7. Fabric distortions: are disruptions in the original surface area values of the sewed fabric.

  8. Fusion: is the degree with fabric yarns are fused together by heat in the sewing action

  9. Gathering: is a corrugated sewing line whose finished sewed length is less than the original cut length of the fabric.
