Lesson 38 : Embroidery Machines

Schiffli Embroidery Machines

They are large, loom like machines used to stitch designs on lengths of piece goods. They are used to embroider piece goods, produce emblems & make novelty and Venice lace trim. Two fabric lengths – 10, 15, or 21 yards depending on machine size are spanned or pulled on to a frame. Frames which are mounted vertically have controlled vertical & horizontal movements directed by a punched tape to form stitch patterns. Action of these machines Schiffli.flv are controlled by an automat, which is a system of rods, cams & levers used to read punched tapes & direct embroidery frames in forming a design.

Needles are mounted on two horizontal fixed tracks that span length of the frames. Needle bars move needles horizontally in & out of piece goods in synchronization of frame movement. A stitched pattern evolves from frame movement. Eyelets fabrics and trims are made by bores mounted directly below the needle bars. Schiffli embroidered fabrics may experience a reduction in yardage due to the heavy concentration of stitches. Because of complexity, size and cost of schiffli equipment and the specialized training and expertise needed to operate it, apparel firms use contractors that specialize in schiffli work.

The majority of embroidered emblems are produced on these schiffli machines because of efficiency and cost. Multihead machines can produce one emblem per head during one run, while schiffli machines can produce hundreds of emblems at one time depending on the size. Emblems are applied to garment by sewing heat sealing and electrostatic adhesion.
