5.1.1.2 Sterility
- Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) x bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilitrix) hybrid.
- Grass carp may serve to control higher vegetation in aquatic systems. In some areas this introduction is not permitted for fear that this uncontrolled reproduction may eradicate aquatic plant growth.
- Grass carp x bighead carp hybrids were produced in order to generate sterile, grazing fish.
- Most of these hybrids were sterile triploids.
- But they are not considered suitable for controlling aquatic vegetation because the grazing rate of hybrid is much lower than that of grass carp.
- The intergeneric hybrids between common carp and the Indian major carps (common carp x catla, common carp x rohu and common carp x mrigal) were also found to be triploid and sterile.
