Lesson 8: Preparation of yarn for weaving

Warp preparation

A processed warp yarn should have essential features as indicated below

  • uniform, clean, and as free from knots as possible
  • Sufficiently strong to withstand the stress and friction of weaving
  • It should be uniformly sized to protect the yarn from abrasion at heddles and reed
  • Should be parallel and must be wound onto the warp beam at an even and equal tension

Warp preparation processes are commonly divided into five sections:

  1. Warp winding
  2. Sizing (Slashing)
  3. Drawing –in
  4. Tying –in
