Sizing (Slashing)

Lesson 8: Preparation of yarn for weaving

Sizing (Slashing)

The short protruding hairs on the yarn may entangle during the weaving process and it is made flat by adding starch to the surface of the yarn in a process called ‘slashing or ‘sizing’ operation. This process also makes the yarn stronger and smoother. Starches, gums or synthetic adhesives along with fatty or oily substances to aid in lubrication are applied to the surface of the yarn. The sizing should be such that it should penetrate and form a good pliable film and should not flake off during weaving. The sized warp is dried and made ready for weaving.
