Calendar of operations

PROGRAMME PLANNING, IMPLEMENTATION AND EVALUATION 2(1+1)

Calendar of operations

This is a time table for the various activities to be carried out in the plan of work. It may be made for a year but mostly covers the weeks or months ahead. With the calendar of work, the local leaders, people, extension workers and specialists know their role and date and time of the various activities in which they are involved. This helps to prevent wastage of time, maintain interest and enthusiasm in various projects. The calendar of work should be accessed by every leader and hence a copy of it should be put up in some prominent places in the village like shops, schools, villagepradhan’s house etc. Calendar of work is more interesting and understandable to villagers if symbolic illustrations are used for representing different activities to be undertaken. For example: a fish used for denoting fish farming and vegetables used for representing nutrition gardening.
It is prepared on the basis of the plan of work and specifies:

  • Particular date and time of a particular activity. It is a time table for various operations to be carried out in the plan of work.
  • Quantity of different inputs required including credit and their availability at the required time.
  • When, where and for how many days the farmers, farm women shall be trained
  • The specialists involved in imparting training
  • Results which give a sense of satisfaction
In a nutshell, the calendar of operations shall specifically state how and when all the significant activities shall be performed. This can be at least for one season termed as seasonal plan or for a period of one year that is annual plan.

Village panchayats, cooperatives, schools, rural youth clubs and individual families and the extension agency may provide proformas and guidance for preparing these. In the early stages, the initiative used to come from extension workers. Based on family and village plans, BDC (Block Development Committee) can prepare an annual plan of work for the entire block based on the real needs of the villagers.
Annual plan of work should be maintained in a simple register at family level, at village level (by panchayats and cooperatives) and by BDC at block level.
