Epidemiology of Azoturia

EPIDEMIOLOGY OF AZOTURIA

  • Sporadic cases occur particularly in race horses fed heavily on grains.
  • In most instances, history of complete inactivity for 2 or more days immediately preceding the onset of disease.
  • Draft horses on rest  because of minor injuries are often maintained on full work ration and become affected when taken back to work.
  • Outbreaks have also been recorded in horses grazing on pasture but taking no exercise.
  • Mycotoxins were also suggested as a predisposing factor, but supporting evidence was not available.
