Lesson 29 : Vitamin B12

Introduction

Vitamin B12 is a member of the vitamin B complex group. It contains cobalt in its structure and so is also known as cobalamin. It is manufactured by microorganisms (e.g. yeasts, bacteria, moulds and some algae). The amount required by the body is very small as it can be stored in the human body for up to six years. The body also recycles vitamin B12, recovering it from bile and other secretions in the intestines. An intrinsic factor is required for absorption of dietary vitamin B12.
