Lesson 12 : Developmental Levels in Art in Children

Collage

Making a collage is a good activity for young preschoolers, as it can be completed quickly and within the interest span of most young preschoolers. It helps them grow physically in their ability to use small muscles as they cut, tear and paste. Young preschoolers can also benefit mentally since they learn in collage activities to choose items and to arrange them into a design. As they paste together collage, they learn about the feel, shape and color of many things and develop the ability to use things in unusual way.

They are given pieces of news paper, colored tissue or any colored scrap paper that tears easily. The teacher shows them, if necessary how to tear large and small pieces. Then they paste those torn bits of paper in to a design on colored construction paper. This is a good activity for young preschoolers who do not want or are not yet able to use scissors. As the children master the basic technique of pasting, more objects can be added to the collage such as large buttons, bits of cloth and colored papers, textures and shapes, bottle caps. Make sure that these materials are not sharp, not small enough to swallow.
