Self Help/Adaptive

Adaptive bahaviour scales are standardized tests used to describe and evaluate the behavior of infants, toddlers and preschoolers especially those at risk for communication delays and behavior impairments.

  1. Battelle Developmental Inventory (BDI):
    • Suitable for children from birth – 8 years
    • Norm referenced test
    • Flexible, semi structured assessment & involves observation of the child, interviews with parents and care givers, developmental and social history, interaction with the child using play materials , tasks and questionnaires.
    • It has 341 items.
    • Domains assessed include- Five domains which include personal/ social skills, communication including expressive and receptive language, gross and fine motor ability and cognitive skills.
    • It is a good example for curriculum referencing and linking assessment, intervention and evaluation beyond a curriculum.
    • Helpful in indentifying child’s patterns of strengths and weaknesses.
  2. Vineland Adaptive Behaviour scale (VABS):
    • Birth to 19 years.
    • It assesses social competence/ personal and social self sufficiency of both normal and handicapped children.
    • Areas to be assessed include
      • Communication : evaluates expressive and written communication skills and ability to listen.
      • Daily living : skills assessed on a personal basis in the family setting and in the wider community., socialization : evaluates interpersonal relationships, play and leisure time activities and interpersonal coping skills.
      • Motor skills : fine and gross motor skills..
  3. Hawaii Early Learning Profile (HELP):
    • For children from birth to 3 years.
    • It is a criterion referenced test.
    • Areas assessed include self help, motor, cognition, language, speech and social development.
